Charlie Daniels, Johnny Lee, & Dolly Parton-Episode 177

Charlie Daniels, Dolly Parton, Johnny Lee

Country Week comes to a close with Urban Cowboy day!

Today’s guests include Johnny Lee and Charlie Daniels, both of whom had cameo roles in the 1980 film that revitalized John Travolta’s career and catapulted an entire class of country artists to superstardom.

Plus, we will hear from Dolly Parton. Matt had the privilege to attend a press conference held by Ms. Parton to discuss her new album, I Believe In You, her first offering for children. Parton has done a lot for youth through her “Imagination Library”, which encourages reading among children. During the press conference, Ms. Parton talked about why I Believe In You is so personal for her, her pride in the Imagination Library, and the touching inspirations behind some of the new album’s songs.

Matt has a hoot of a time talking with Johnny Lee. Mr. Lee’s sense of hyperbole and humor is just as sharp as his sense for picking the right song. Lee had two numbers in the film Urban Cowboy One, “Cherokee Fiddle,” and the other, a song that is considered the movie’s theme, “Lookin’ For Love.” Even 3 decades later, the film and the songs are providing a career for Johnny Lee. The music, he says, has touched all the generations.

And finally this week, Matt had the chance to sit down with Charlie Daniels at the St. George Theatre on Staten Island. I welcomed Charlie Daniels. The pair discuss his new book, Never Look at the Empty Seats, why he still does Meet and Greets, and even some tour routing.

Daniels, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, Grammy winner, and Opry member, reveals stories never-before-told in his new memoir. It is a book, he says, he has been working on for over 20 years. But he could never find an appropriate final chapter. That’s because there seems to be no final chapter in sight for the entertainer, who just turned 81 this week. Daniels continues to tour the country.

Matt wishes to give his thanks to EVERYONE who appeared on the show this past week. He is always proud to ‘fly the flag’ for country music artists, past and present.
